Ken Kalman's sculptures are constructed primarily of aluminum and copper. His pieces are of animals and insects, some life size, some substantially larger. Each sculpture has been carefully designed and engineered, and assembled with rivets and screws. Kalman possesses a deep respect and appreciation for fine craftsmanship and things made by hand.
"Oceana" is a tableau of the sea life that abounds in the nearby San Francisco Bay and Pacific Ocean. Here, Kalman depicts salmon migrating with seagulls perched above; just below, an albatross gently glides in the breeze over the waves. A seahorse peers out from a kelp bed while around the corner, a sea turtle swims effortlessly through the water. In the distance, a tiger shark looms, ominously searching for his next meal.
